Characterization of Tourists in Anguilla

During the months of March and April 2008, a total of 300 tourists were surveyed. The whole tourist demographic in Anguilla is likely represented by the survey sample of 56 percent female and 78 percent American. Sixty-nine percent of respondents were between the ages of 45 and 54 years old, and 25 percent were with a child of 16 years old. 

Respondents in full-time employment made up 48 percent of the sample, while self-employed made up 24 percent, and retired made up 15 percent. Most of the respondents had a degree from a university, 12 percent had a Ph.D. and 10 percent had a Vocational qualification.

65 percent of respondents were visiting Anguilla for 7 to 14 days and the average vacation length was 10 days. The number of previous visits ranged from 1 to 40 and the majority of respondents had visited Anguilla before. 86 percent of visitors have previously visited other Caribbean islands. 

Respondent’s previous visits to Anguilla were not evenly distributed throughout the year, with most of them occurring in March and April. Only 3 percent of respondents visited during the peak hurricane months of August and September, while 14 percent visited during the 6-month season from June to November.

Eighty-four percent of respondents said hurricanes were likely in September, 31 percent knew the season started in June and 42 percent knew the season ended in November. Only 9 percent of respondents thought the season ended in November. Current vacation reservations were made by 40 percent of respondents who considered hurricanes.

The Caribbean climate and the country’s favorable atmosphere were ranked as the two most important reasons for visiting Anguilla in March and April, followed by holiday costs and time off from work or school. Reasons to choose Anguilla as a holiday destination can be found below.
